Ever found yourself making a snack, cleaning out a drawer, or, let's be real, watching just one more episode when you're meant to be on task?

Procrastination: ugh, we've all been there.

Noone - including the business CEO, the zealous entrepreneur or even the college student -  is immune from falling into the sneaky trap of procrastination.

But before we dive in, here are some highlights of today’s blog:

  • What's the real deal with procrastination?
  • Why on earth do we keep putting things off?
  • And, the big one: How do we kick the habit?

What is Procrastination, Anyway?

Contrary to popular belief, procrastination isn't about laziness or poor time management.

Procrastination is a behavior centered on delaying tasks or decisions. This act is deeply tied to self-regulation and managing emotions.

A study in the journal Psychological Science highlighted that procrastination relates more to sidestepping negative emotions connected with a task, like fear or self-doubt, rather than the task itself. Over time, avoidance becomes habitual, hampering productivity.

In my research, I stumbled upon references to procrastination dating back to ancient times. It's even mentioned in the Book of Proverbs and echoed in memorable quotes by luminaries like Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain, who both championed the sentiment of not putting off until tomorrow what can be done today.

If there's any solace to be found, it's that procrastination has been an intrinsic facet of human existence for millennia. What's changed is our modern understanding of its root causes, equipping us with the insights to tackle it in ways previously unimagined.

Why Do We Procrastinate?

One of my favorite (and most entertaining) explanations for procrastination came from a TED Talk on Youtube, “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator” by Tim Urban.  At the time I was dealing with major procrastination issue with one of my kids so I thought we’d watch it together.  This talk opened the door to further conversation about the problem and helped us both navigate the procrastination problem with more ease.

So, why oh why do we do this?

The list is long and varied.  But here are some of the reasons we procrastinate:

  • Fear of Failure: As the age-old saying goes, "Not trying is the only true failure." Yet, the weight of expectations, self-imposed or from others, can be paralyzing. The fear of falling short or facing criticism can push one into the comfort of delay. That dread of not measuring up is a thing, and it's a real productivity zapper.
  • Chasing Perfection: Okay, wanting things to be spot on isn't bad. But waiting for the stars to align so everything's just right? That's where we trip up. Sometimes, good enough is, well, good enough!
  • Decision Drama: Choices, choices! Like when you're staring at a menu and can't pick because it all looks yum. Sometimes, life throws big decisions our way, and we freeze up. It's a thing.
  • Lack of interest: Let's face it, not everything on our to-do list gets us buzzing. Not every task sparks joy. When the excitement's missing, we drag our feet. Like, why rush, right? Without motivation, action becomes a chore, and delay seems like the easier option. You’d rather do something more enjoyable.
  • Task Turn-offs: Some tasks are like that itchy sweater—uncomfortable and annoying. Or maybe it’s just too long or complicated. We'll dodge, duck, and weave just to avoid them. It's human nature! But also... procrastination. In this case, procrastination is an escape route from the mundane or the distressing.
  • Conditioning:  If no one cares that you hand in work late and you successfully use your charms to get away with procrastination than you may be taking advantage of a situation to practice procrastination. This won’t last.
  • Just plain laziness.  Unfortunately.

Who Does Procrastination Affect?

The "I'll do it later" mindset isn't exclusive; it spans from college night owls to overwhelmed CEOs.

Interestingly, even high achievers, perceived as paragons of productivity, aren't immune. Their self-imposed pressures and lofty standards can ironically push them into the procrastination pit. Some even wear the "last-minute genius" badge with pride, thinking pressure fuels their best work.

However, the real crux of procrastination emerges when a daunting task encounters someone impulsive with low self-discipline—making individuals with ADHD particularly susceptible.

The Cost of Procrastination

Regardless of its origins, there is a price to pay for procrastinating.  For example:

  • Emotional ups and downs: That guilt of not starting earlier? The stress of watching deadlines loom? The inner critic that won't shut up? These feelings increase stress and lower well-being.
  • Loss in productivity: It's no rocket science—delay tasks, and soon you're swamped.
  • Financial loss:  Undesired delays can cost you money such as saving for retirement, late fees, or higher interest rates.
  • Poor quality work: A rushed job is rarely a top-notch one. That last-minute hustle can't match careful planning.
  • Damage to your reputation: Continually pushing the deadline? People notice. And not in the "wow, they're so chill" way. More like, "Can we rely on them?"
  • Health Setbacks: The increased stress from chronic procrastination leads to health issues like higher blood pressure, tension headaches, digestive issues and more. Delaying much needed medical appointments can also negatively affect your health.
  • Lost opportunities: waiting too long to write that best seller, postponing major business decisions, forgetting to answer emails, neglecting to fix the broken chain on your bicycle can all result in unfortunate loss of opportunity.

Kick the Habit

Regardless of the cause or history or price you've already paid, it's never too late to tackle procrastination.  What follows are some tried and true strategies for kicking the habit of delay once and for all.

  • Prioritize Tasks: Consider tools like the Eisenhower Box or the ABCD system to sort tasks by importance.
  • Segment Tasks: Deconstruct overwhelming tasks into bite-sized steps. Tackle these during your prime focus hours, or discuss them with a colleague to simplify further. Once fragmented, starting becomes less daunting and more rewarding.
  • Prioritize Time Management: Implement focus-enhancing strategies such as the Pomodoro technique.
  • Ditch Distractions: Curb mental distractions with focus and calming exercises. For external diversions, consider earplugs, moving your phone away, dimming screens, or seeking a quieter space.
  • Set Firm Deadlines: Deadlines can be double-edged but are crucial for task completion. Even self-imposed ones can give tasks an endpoint, ensuring your brain doesn't view them as lingering to-dos.
  • Seek Out Accountability: Share your objectives with someone who can monitor your advancement. Choose someone compassionate but assertive to keep you on track.
  • Regulate Your Emotions:  If procrastination is a behavior based on emotional self-regulation, learn how to become more aware of your emotions and work through them rather than avoid them.  Reach out to a good life coach with a specialty in emotional intelligence to help you develop more awareness and guide you through those tricky feelings.
  • Cultivate Self-Compassion: Recognize when you're overwhelmed and be open to seeking assistance. Avoiding self-blame can prevent negative emotional spirals into the abyss of shame.

By adopting these strategies, tackling procrastination becomes a doable feat!

That's a Wrap!

In our exploration of procrastination, we've unearthed its deep-seated roots in human behavior and emotional regulation, a trait that has trailed us from ancient times to modern days.  While it's a universal challenge, affecting everyone from students to CEOs, understanding its nuances gives you a leg up in combatting it.

Now I turn it over to you.  By embracing tools and strategies like task segmentation, time management, and accountability, you can overcome this habit and reclaim personal agency over your time, productivity, reputation, health and finances.

As you forge ahead, remember that awareness is the first step.  With persistence and self-compassion,  you can break the chains of procrastination, tackle your  challenges head-on and emerge stronger and more in control.
