Fun Isn't Frivolous, It's Fundamental
Growing up as the oldest of 5 children (and the only girl), I learned to shoulder burdens at a young age. My nickname was Miss Responsibility. Seriousness was not only a trait but my familiar comfort zone, an integral part of my persona that I nurtured meticulously. That trait served me well professionally for many years and I was given many leadership roles and responsibilities as a result.
Fast forward to the year that changed my outlook forever, when the unforgiving diagnosis of cancer cast a shadow on my life, the worldview I held tightly started to shift.
And that diagnosis came just months after my long-estranged but recently reconnected father passed swiftly from cancer, the loss of our family dog, the collapse of my network marketing team, and a few other significant challenges.
Talk about serious!
How do you navigate life’s most serious challenges, a future of uncertainty, if you are continually weighed down by seriousness?
The answer for me took on an unexpected form - it was about letting go, welcoming lightness, and giving myself permission to find joy in the journey, even when it was clouded with uncertainty.
"Whaddya gonna do about it?" was my uber serious father's famous line later in life as he, too, began to embrace more lightness. Lucky for me, I am married to a guy well known for his sense of humor, so that support was vital in trusting it was okay to shift.
I discovered that seriousness didn't have to be my shield, that laughter could coexist with worry, and that moments of fun could be the lifeline guiding me towards resilience and healing.
The uncharted terrain of uncertainty and vulnerability ushered in a stark realization of life's transience. Amid this tumultuous period, the medicine that truly healed my spirit was found in unexpected places - fun, laughter, and joy.
Each moment of play, every shared laugh, every joyous interaction with those dear to me became a beacon of hope in the storm.
These instances of lightness taught me what I was fighting for. They lent meaning to every moment, reminding me why every battle was worth enduring, every hardship worth confronting.
The Science Behind Fun
Believe it or not, the power of fun and play isn't just anecdotal, it's backed by science.
Psychologists have found that humor and laughter can help manage stress and pain, improve mood, and increase resilience.
Various studies and research indicate that engaging in joyful, fun-filled activities isn't just about killing time or escaping the humdrum of daily life. No, it's so much more profound than that.
The real magic of fun and play lies in their immense capacity to heal, uplift, and transform.
Humor allows us to view our situations from a fresh perspective, diluting the intensity of stress and bringing lightness to the darkest of scenarios. Laughter, the most natural expression of fun, releases endorphins - our body's natural feel-good chemicals - promoting an overall sense of well-being and even temporary pain relief. It's no wonder they call laughter the best medicine!
Moreover, fun and play significantly contribute to our ability to bounce back from adversity, enhancing our resilience. They remind us of our capacity for joy and fulfillment amidst the chaos, encouraging us to face obstacles with a spirited attitude. It's a bit like turning up the music and dancing during a power outage - there's something powerful and rebelliously hopeful in that act.
Additionally, cultivating a playful mindset has been linked to increased creativity and problem-solving skills.
When we're playful, we're more open to new ideas, more willing to take risks, and more capable of thinking outside the box.
It's the reason why many successful organizations are integrating elements of play into their work environments, recognizing the importance of fun in fostering innovation and productivity.
In a nutshell, having fun isn't just an optional extra in life; studies show laughter is an essential component of our well-being and mental resilience.
The Flip Side: Resilience in the Younger Generations
On the flip side, I often feel concerned about our younger generation when it comes to their resilience when the work isn't fun.
I have two young adults myself, and I've worked with many young adults as both a coach and a colleague.
Today's younger generations have grown up in an era of technology and relative comfort. While there are many benefits to this upbringing, it has inadvertently created a generation that is, in some ways, less resilient to life's hard knocks.
Many young people today haven't experienced the same kind of hardships and challenges that previous generations did. That's not to say they don't face challenges – they absolutely do, and those challenges are significant. But the nature of these challenges is different. They're often more mental and emotional rather than physical.
As a result, when hard times hit, some young people may struggle to cope, not because they aren't capable, but because they may not have had to flex their resilience muscle as much as older generations.
This brings us to an important point:
While fun and joy are vital components of a fulfilling life, so too is resilience and the ability to handle adversity.
The reality is life is not always fun.
There will be times when we have to do things we don't want to do, face situations we would rather avoid, and deal with problems we'd prefer not to have.
It's in these times that our resilience is tested, and it's through these experiences that we grow and learn. Hardship and adversity can be powerful teachers, helping us build our resilience muscle and develop coping strategies that will serve us throughout our lives.
So, while we advocate for more fun, joy, and play in our lives, we also recognize the importance of challenges and hard times. After all, it's the balance of both fun and hardship that makes life interesting and helps us develop as whole, well-rounded individuals.
Is Your Work a Bad Fit If It's Not Fun?
When it comes to work, it's important to remember that not all roles are designed to be fun. Some roles require a level of seriousness, attention to detail, or analytical thinking that may not naturally lend itself to fun and games. However, that doesn't mean the role is a bad fit for you.
But if the thought of your work fills you with dread and there's no aspect of it you enjoy, it may be time to reflect on whether it's the right fit. If you're constantly pushing through, accepting things as hard, and finding no joy in your work, it could be a sign you're in the wrong role or perhaps the wrong environment.
