Rethinking Hustle: How to Find Balance Between Passion, Paychecks and Personal Time

Find yourself up at 2 a.m. (again) typing away on your laptop, convinced that you're just so passionate about your job you can't possibly sleep?

Do you justify overworking with the belief “I'm not a workaholic; I'm just really passionate about what I do!"?

Has burning the midnight oil become a regular habit or even a badge of honor, even at the expense of other areas of your life?

If any of these scenarios hit close to home, this blog is for you.

Passionate or Workaholic?

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to fall into the trap of overwork, often blurring the lines between passion, paychecks, and personal time.  

To honestly examine where passion ends and workaholism begins you have to know the definition of each.

First things first, let’s break this down.

  • Workaholism: Imagine a friend who just can’t stop talking about work, feels super guilty for taking a day off, and whose self-worth is almost entirely hinged on their job. Sound familiar? That’s workaholism for you.
  • Passion: Now, think of that bubbly friend who loves their job so much they could talk about it for hours. They’re excited, they’re enthusiastic, but they also know when to shut off. That's the beauty of genuine passion.

It’s vital to recognize the subtle differences and, more importantly, the impact each can have on your overall well-being and life balance.

Workaholism is like a shadow that silently creeps in, making you believe that your worth is solely determined by your work output. It's a relentless chase where the finish line keeps moving further away. No matter how much you achieve, it never feels like enough.

On the other hand, passion is that inner flame that ignites your spirit. It's about being deeply committed and in love with what you do, but not to the detriment of your personal life. Passion fuels you, gives you purpose, and brings joy, but it also respects boundaries.

The key is to strike a balance.

Loving what you do is a blessing, but it should never come at the cost of losing yourself or missing out on life's other precious moments.

So, the next time you find yourself burning the midnight oil, take a moment to reflect: Is this driven by my passion or am I slipping into the grips of workaholism?

The Passion Paradox

There is a gray area between passion and workaholism.

Here’s the tricky part: sometimes passion can slide into workaholism without us even realizing.

It might start with just one weekend of work, then two, and before you know it, you're spiraling. So, what pushes us over that edge? Could be the pressure to outdo ourselves, or perhaps societal values shouting, "More is better!"

Before you Type B’s out there shrug off this issue as “not my problem”, think twice.  You’re just as vulnerable to crossing the line if you also have a passionate pursuit.  In fact, you may be even more vulnerable if you fall into the trap of quiet perfectionism, poor boundaries or even overcompensation  to “fit in” or “keep up.”

So, the million-dollar question is “How do you transition from doing something out of love to becoming compulsively attached to it?”

Ground zero is understanding the triggers that might cause you to cross the line.  Awareness of root causes is the place to begin.

What follows are examples of root causes that trigger workaholism. The goal is to be honest, be compassionate, but most of all, be open to making change before you pay a potentially steep price.

Trigger: Societal Pressure

Our society glorifies being busy, often equating busyness with importance. This gives workaholics drive and can mask workaholism behind the veil of passion.

Raise your hand if you've bragged about pulling an all-nighter or missing a party because of work.

Another insidious societal habit is overpraising people for their relentless dedication when they overwork, further blurring the line between healthy passion and detrimental workaholism.

But let's get real here – just because you’re always busy doesn’t mean you’re always productive or fulfilled.

Picture this: You’re at a gathering, and the conversation shifts to how everyone’s week has been. You hear phrases like, "Oh, I've been swamped!" or "You won’t believe how hectic my schedule is!" It almost becomes a competition, doesn’t it? Who’s the busiest bee in the hive?

You might have found yourself nodding in agreement or even chiming in with tales of your own late-night ventures and endless to-do lists. After all, there's a bizarre sense of pride we've been conditioned to feel when we're the last one burning the midnight oil or the first to light it up again at dawn.

But why is that?

It's fascinating, and frankly, a tad concerning, how society has linked 'busy' with 'successful.' The busier you are, the more important, more dedicated, more 'in demand' you must be.

This mindset pushes the narrative that taking time for oneself is equivalent to laziness or lack of ambition. It's as if constantly being 'on' is the only validation of our worth.

However - and this is crucial - there’s a vast expanse between being genuinely productive and just being busy. While one leads to accomplishment and a sense of fulfillment, the other can result in burnout, stress, and feelings of emptiness.

It's worth pondering:

Is your busyness leading to productivity or just feeding into a societal perception? 

Let's challenge the norm and recognize that constant motion doesn’t always mean forward movement.

Trigger:  Boundary Issues

Think back to that weekend getaway you canceled out because of a 'crucial' assignment or a self-imposed deadline or the numerous evenings you sacrificed at the altar of overtime. How often have you brushed aside your own self-care routine, promising yourself, "Just this once, then I'll make time for me"?

Ever felt that unspoken pressure to stay late because everyone else does it? Or have clients who send emails at midnight that you feel you need to reply to ASAP?

Got a demanding boss, feel vulnerable to peer pressure, or grew up in a culture that rewards overwork?

It's an all-too-common narrative for many, where the line between professional duties and personal time becomes so faint it's almost invisible. This ongoing merging of work and leisure isn’t just about time lost; it's about life missed.

Recognizing these external pressures can be the first step to addressing and navigating them.  The next step is plugging up the leaks with solid boundaries. 

Not drawing  clear boundaries can lead to more than just fatigue. There's the creeping emotional burnout, which doesn't announce itself but slowly builds up. Then there’s the inevitable detachment from loved ones, the missed birthdays, the anniversaries celebrated in absentia.

The joy of simply living and relishing the present becomes overshadowed by the looming pressures of work. When we allow work to infiltrate every corner of our lives, we risk losing touch with who we are outside of our professional titles.

Don’t let this blurring of professional and personal take a toll on your health, relationships, and overall well-being.

Next time guilt tries to creep in as you set a boundary, remember you’re not just protecting your time, you’re safeguarding your essence, your relationships, and the myriad other joys that life has to offer.

Realignment Work: Ask yourself: Am I setting boundaries? Am I in love with the work itself or just the applause that comes after? Periodic self-check-ins, perhaps even with a mentor or coach, can help ensure you’re in alignment with your true passion.

Trigger:  Financial Pressures

Let's talk about the elephant in the room: money.

For many over workers, the driving force behind long hours isn’t passion or societal pressure – it’s the undeniable need to pay bills, support families, and provide a cushion for those rainy days. If you feel strapped for cash, the idea of reducing hours can be terrifying.

Your concerns are real and valid. Financial security is a cornerstone of peace and stability.

However, here's a point to ponder.

Is overworking truly ensuring your financial stability or is it creating a work more-spend more cycle and perpetuating the feeling you NEED to work more?

The number of hours you work doesn't always directly correlate with income, especially in jobs or businesses where creativity, strategy, or client relationships play a role.

Sometimes, working smarter can lead to earning more than merely working harder or longer. Check out Tim Ferriss's revolutionary book, "The 4-Hour Workweek".  I wrote about this “Paradox of Productivity” idea in last week’s blog “How to Achieve More with Less”.   While hard work is undeniably essential, it's crucial to discern between merely being busy and being genuinely productive. And this is where the "less is more" philosophy steps in.  It's worth evaluating how you can maximize your income without necessarily increasing your hours.

And what are you trading in return?

Your health will pay a price.  Prolonged overworking can lead to significant medical bills, not to mention the emotional toll that can strain relationships and one's mental health. There's also the potential for burnout which might disrupt your income flow entirely.

In the long run, overworking might be costing you more than you think.

Instead of just working more hours…

Why not meet with a financial advisor to help create a plan that maximizes your earnings, helps reduce unnecessary expenditures, and sets clear savings goals. This plan can often illuminate pathways to financial stability without the need for constant overwork.

With the right strategies in place, and by taking a holistic view of your life costs and goals, it's possible to find a balance that aligns with both your financial and well-being needs.

Moving Forward 

Alrighty, time for a heart-to-heart. It's absolutely fabulous to be passionate about your work. But it's equally essential to recognize when passion morphs into something less healthy. Check in with yourself. Seek feedback. Maybe even chat with others in your field about how they maintain balance.

Encourage self-reflection:

Are you driven by a genuine love for what you do, or are you chasing after external validations and rewards?

There's no denying that the line between passion and workaholism is thin and often blurry. But with a little introspection, a dash of self-awareness, and perhaps a sprinkle of external perspective, you can ensure you're working with passion and purpose, not just out of compulsion.

Remember, life’s a marathon, not a sprint. So, let's make sure we're running it for the right reasons!
