Picture this.
You're juggling a demanding career, a bustling family life, and a pile of personal responsibilities that just keeps growing. When you’re at home you’re thinking about work and when you’re at work you’re thinking about what needs to be done at home.
Sound familiar?
It probably does, because this is the reality for many of us, especially high-achievers who have been conditioned to excel in everything we do in life, feel guilty for taking care of ourselves and uncomfortable letting others down.
Life has a way of presenting a wake-up call for us when we don't see the things in front of us.
In today's blog let's explore:
- the difference between life balance and life harmony
- the global phenomenon of the imbalance of work and life
- high-profile examples of when the imbalance goes too far
- 5 solid strategies for moving toward life balance
If I had to sum up in advance the key takeaway in today's blog, I'd have to say - work-life harmony should be a non-negotiable if you want to succeed beyond today - invest in your future!
Life feels chaotic.
You’ve been juggling all the things and feeling like a like a circus performer, trying to keep all the balls in the air.
This lifestyle isn’t sustainable. You know it isn’t. You might manage it for a while, but it's exhausting, and sooner or later, something's going to drop.
The thought comes into your mind that life is out of balance.
That's where many of us go wrong.
We aim for a perfect equilibrium between our work and personal life, picturing them on opposite ends of a scale. But let's be honest, how often does that happen?
Life is unpredictable. There will be times when work demands more of our attention, and times when our personal life takes precedence.
Striving for balance is like chasing a mirage.
Recent studies indicate this imbalance of work-life is a global issue. A survey by Ernst & Young polled 9,700 full-time employees in some of the world's largest economies.
The result?
One-third said managing work-life has become more difficult. This is not an isolated issue; it's a global phenomenon that needs addressing.
When we attempt to “balance” work and life we end up with a self defeating lifestyle filled with guilt and frustration. It just can’t be balanced all of the time.
What we should aim for is harmony.
Work-life harmony is a beautiful blend where all the elements of your life coexist in a way that, overall, works for you. It's not about a 50-50 split. It's about integrating all aspects of life so that we're not just working hard, but also living well.
Work-life harmony. It's a term that may feel as elusive as a unicorn to some.
For years, I was one of those people. Like many of you, I was locked in the exhausting tug of war between professional demands and personal life. I felt this belief I had to give everything my all at the same level, elevating everything to a priority all the time.
But the pressure forced me to look closer at this myth of balance. What if I was aiming for the wrong goal?
Work-life harmony isn't about tipping the scales one way or another or even creating an unreachable ideal of perfect balance. It's about developing an ebb and flow between your professional and personal lives that works for you, one that brings peace, not anxiety.
I had an epiphany in an unexpected way - through my children's orchestra.
As a parent, I spent seven years of my life ferrying my children to orchestra rehearsals and sitting through numerous concerts. Like all proud parents, my heart would swell as I saw my kids on stage, their fingers dancing across their instruments (violin and bass).
But I noticed something fascinating.
In an orchestra, not all instruments played equally all the time. There were moments of soft silence followed by triumphant crescendos. My kids weren't always in the spotlight. Sometimes the violins took the lead, sometimes the cellos, and other times the woodwinds. Each instrument, each musician, played according to the composition, seamlessly shifting and yielding to each other like a beautifully choreographed dance.
The result was a symphony. A harmonious melody that resonated with the audience and left them wanting more.
I came to this new realization.
This is what we should strive for in our lives. Not equal playtime, but playing the right tune at the right time. It's about recognizing when our professional life needs to take the lead and when our personal life requires us to step back from work. It's about creating a harmonious blend, a symphony of our own lives.
Work-life harmony is about appreciating every moment, every note, whether you're in the spotlight or playing a supporting role. And when we can do that, we find not only peace but also joy.
Isn't that what life's all about?
Are you feeling life is like a whirlwind at times? Why do we still struggle with feelings of chaos and overwhelm?
How can we learn from these powerful women and implement their successful habits into our own lives, before we hit rock bottom?
Now, I'm about to lay down some hard truth here. Buckle up, it might sting a bit.
The cold, hard fact is that, despite external factors that we can't always control, we ourselves often have a hand in the creation of our own chaos. It can stem from numerous sources, be it a shaky sense of self-worth, flimsy boundaries, past trauma that's yet to be dealt with, or even skewed perceptions of what success really looks like. The reasons are as varied as we are.
But here's the silver lining...
If we can create our chaos, we certainly have the power to banish it too. We can take the reins and guide our lives towards work-life harmony. How? Through a potent mix of self-discovery, honest reflection, acquiring new skills and habits, and putting in place the right support systems.
